Bat Roosting Behavior
Bats can be found living almost in any type of shelter, but they are most know for the scary little animals that people see when they visit caves. Since caves have become more active today with the number of people engaging in extreme sports, such as spelunking, this natural habitat has been disappearing for them.
Bats that live in the tropics have a wider range of roosting sites than other species. For example, the trees offer very large leaves that the bats bite through to make a tent like roost for themselves. They will also just bury themselves and hide within the large leaves by using the suction discs on the wings to stay within the leaf.
Banana plants are popular roosting homes for bats as their feet have sharp claws that allow them to cling to the leaves every easily.
Things that bats look for is a warm, dry place that is protected from their predators. They are sensitive to smells and prefer to have natural scents around them.
One of the things about bats is that they sometimes will adapt to living in one type of roost and then struggle if that habitat changes for any reason. They don’t tend to survive well if they are forced to look for other kinds of roosts.
