How Do Bats Fly?

Bats are unique in that they have all the characteristics of mammals such as hair, a regulated body temperature, and the ability to bear their young alive and nurse them.

Bats are the only mammals that really do flying which has given them a nickname of “flying squirrels” in certain areas of the country.  They can actually obtain true flight with the way that their wings are constructed.

Their muscles provide lightness and maneuverability that is needed for catching insects, hovering around flowers and for avoiding obstacles in their way.  The wing is actually a membrane that contains two thin layers of skin with blood vessels, nerves, and tendons just like any other mammal.

Their bones are lightweight, and designed to be slender sot that they can support, spread and manipulate the wing membrane.  Their thumb has a sharp claw is not actually attached to the arm membrane.   This allows them the ability to cling to various surfaces.
