Vampire Bats

Vampire Bats are the ones that have created that perception that bats are dangerous and deadly.   While there are Eastern European tales of a vampire which is a corpse that comes back to life and sucks blood from the neck of its human victim, this is just not true.   These stories date back to the Middle Ages, but in fact, vampire bats are not native to either Europe or Asia.

This is really a case of the bat being names for a legend rather than the legend originating with the bat.  The truth is that vampire bats feed mainly on the blood of cattle, horses, and wild mammals such as deer.   It is not known for biting humans.

When a vampire bats feeds, it will chose to land near a hairless area of thin skin, such as a hoof or shoulder of the animal.   They will then hop or walk to a likely spot, lick it, then make a small incision and then start lapping the blood.

The bite itself or the loss of blood does not harm the animal as the blood loss is minimal.   What creates a problem for the animal is the exposure to infections, parasites, and viruses such as rabies.
