What Bats Are Looking For In Their House?

OK, that may seem like a silly title for this page, but it’s really true. Bats are very particular about there homes.

Here’s a list of some of the things that are so important to a bat.

  1. It has to be somewhere where it’s the right temperature for them. The house needs to receive 10-16 hours of sunlight a day.
  2. It has to have an easy way to get into “from the bottom”. Bet you didn’t know that one.
  3. It has to have a rough interior because they need to be able to grasp with walls with their claws. Vertical grooves make it easier for them to climb into the house.
  4. It has to be made of nature wood so they identify it with a nature environment. This also makes sure that there are not any chemicals that could affect the bats.
  5. If painted, it needs to be a dark color to absorb heat, such as black or brown. It must be water based paint so there is not an odor.
  6. Houses should be built with screws and not nails as this will keep them more weather tight.
  7. Houses need to be weather tight so no rain or snow can get in.
  8. Houses need to be located near a water supply, whether natural or provided for them.
  9. Houses need to be located where there are not any obstructions so that they can swoop in.
  10. Houses need to be places where predators can not reach them.

Seems like a long list, but actually each one is important to a bat. If one of these things is not correct, the bats either will not use the house to roost, or they will leave.

Maintaining the house is so important once bats start roosting. This will encourage them to stay and once they are comfortable with their new home, they will continue to come back.
